College of Science
The College of Science (CoS) of
National Changhua University of Education (NCUE) consists of Department and Graduate Institute of
Mathematics, Department and Graduate Institute of Physics, Department and
Graduate Institute of Biology, Department and Graduate Institute of Chemistry,
Graduate Institute of Science Education, Graduate Institute of Photonics, Graduate Institute of Biotechnology,
and Graduate Institute of Statistics
and Information Science. Every year, two classes of students are enrolled in the Department of Physics and the
Department of Mathematics, respectively; while only one class of students is
enrolled in the other two departments, respectively. TheCoS
has the largest number of students and faculty members compared with other
colleges of NCUE.
Formerly, the CoS was
the Department of Science Education
under the thenNational
Taiwan Educational
College. Originally, the
department recruited only in-service teachers with a junior college diploma for
its experimental orientation. Afterwards, it recruited students via the Joint
College Entrance Exam and established year by year four tracks including
mathematics, physics, biology, and chemistry. Under the approval by the Ministry
of Education in 1981, these four tracks were expanded into four independent
departments in order to provide better quality of teaching, administration and
opportunities for students’ career. In addition, to continue the functionality
of the Department of Science Education, which emphasizes applying teaching and
research to science education, our faculty members, with the passion for
science education, dedicated themselves in the establishment of the Graduate
Institute of Science Education, which was then established in 1987. Later in
1989, the school was renamed National Changhua University of Education, and the
College of Science Education was founded with four departments (Department of
Mathematics, Department of Physics, Department of Chemistry, and Department of
Biology) and the independent Graduate Institute of Science Education. In
accordance with the Teacher Cultivation Act and for the future development of
students, theCollege ofScience Education expanded undergraduate classes and
graduate programs and was renamedCollege
ofScience in 1993. In
the same year, Graduate Institute of Science Education established its doctoral
program. Master programs of mathematics, physics, and biology were set up in
1994, 1997 and 1998, respectively. In 1999, the doctoral program of mathematics
was founded, followed by the establishment of the master program of chemistry
in the next year. In 2002, Graduate Institute of Photonics was founded, and the
doctoral program in physics in the following year. In 2004, the Department of
Biology set up its Graduate Institute of Biotechnology. Later in 2005, the
Graduate Institute of Statistics was
established. With the doctoral program of photonics coming into being in
2008, theCoS
has finally seen its complete scale.
The
two pillars of the CoS are science education and scientific technologies, the
two fields in which theCoS has recruited new
faculty members in recent years. Our new recruits are experts in the most
innovative and forward-looking fields. Through developing these pillars, theCoS enhances its competitiveness and is thus able to
transition itself. On the other hand, the CoS attracts elites in centralTaiwan to
enroll in NCUE and retains its students for further education.
